Date: 2007-01-02 08:50 pm (UTC)I got freaked out when I couldn't hear it until I realized all the volumes on my computer were turned down.
But....
ARGH!
You *could* have it for a ringtone, but ... WHY?
Also, when I'm in the Room With Giant Fan in the SF office, I can't hear it.

Date: 2007-01-02 09:28 pm (UTC)I wish I could find it, but I've got no idea where we stored it.
It's basically a 15Khz tone sitting right at the edge of where the MP3 low pass filter sits. Most computers aren't even capable of playing back this tone.

Date: 2007-01-02 09:57 pm (UTC)Aha! Which means playing on your computer isn't a real test of whether or not one can hear it.
I suspect I can't anyway, but that's a different matter.

Date: 2007-01-02 11:31 pm (UTC)Thing is, some mobile companies (Verizon comes to mind) lock out phone capabilites, including which audio file format can be assigned as ringtones. Most opt for .amr, .awb, or .mmf, .3gp, or some variant based on the 3GPP spec. I bet a lot of people are going spend $2.50, get a compressed 8khz file like this, and have some distorted gurggle that everyone's going to hear.
Kind of an amusing way to fuck over people. :)

Date: 2007-01-03 12:15 am (UTC)Typically the sampling rate, divided by two = bandwidth.
CDs are 44.1Khz, and you can reasonably hear up to about 20Khz. Professional audio houses work at 24bit, 192Khz and the difference is just amazing.

Date: 2007-01-02 09:59 pm (UTC)I don't think can hear this, and I've got crazy good ears that scare people they're so sensitive. I suspect I'm just too ancient!
And you? Can you hear it? :D

Date: 2007-01-03 08:09 am (UTC)You know what does happen when I play this tone? (This is not the first time I've tried to listen.) My ears start to ring. Badly. Weird, eh? And I know that's not "the tone" because I "heard" it on a TV news show where they enhanced it for old folks to hear.
